MIEACT is proud to announce the commissioning of an original artwork by Ngunnawal artist, Lynnice Church. This new piece serves as a powerful testament to the integral relationship between culture, community, and mental health.
The artwork, which reflects the vibrant and natural colours of the Ngunnawal landscape, embodies the deep connection between Country, family, and community, emphasising their influence on mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. By incorporating select colours from MIEACT’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and grounding the piece in the visual language of the Ngunnawal Country, Church’s work beautifully showcases the uniqueness and richness of the local community.
The artwork has been developed to reflect the colours of the Ngunnawal landscape, showcasing the essential relationship between connection to Country, family, and community and its impact on mental, physical, and spiritual health and well-being. Through this thoughtful approach, the piece underscores the importance of nurturing positive connections that contribute to a sense of belonging.
The symbolism in Church’s artwork extends beyond aesthetics; it represents the shared mission of individuals, community, and organisations like MIEACT to educate, listen, and spread awareness about mental illness. It speaks to the critical role of supportive environments in the lives of those experiencing mental health challenges, reminding viewers of the power of collective efforts in fostering understanding and connection.
Prudence Slaughter, CEO of MIEACT, expressed excitement about this meaningful addition to the organisation, stating, “This piece not only highlights the significance of cultural and communal ties but also reinforces our commitment to supporting mental health and reducing stigma through education, as well as our dedication to our Reconciliation Action Plan. It embodies our ongoing efforts to integrate First Nations perspectives and strengthen relationships with Indigenous communities.”
As MIEACT continues to provide evidence-informed programs across Canberra, this new artwork stands as a visual representation of their dedication to promoting recovery, awareness, and a welcoming environment for all.
With its rich cultural significance and compelling narrative, Lynnice Church’s artwork invites everyone to appreciate the value of shared knowledge, belonging, and the enduring connection to the land that underpins collective well being.
