Mental health in the workplace
Training is delivered using MIEACT’s Do NO Harm framework and stories as told by people living with mental illness. MIEACT’s Do NO Harm framework has been developed from 25 years experience of mental health consumers sharing their stories safely in schools and the broader community to raise awareness, reduce stigma and increasing help seeking behaviour.
The power of lived experience.
By the end of this program participants will have an understanding of how to communicate safely using the Do NO Harm framework with clients and peers to increase effective communication, decrease escalation and minimise retraumatisation. Participants will reflect on how their attitudes, behaviours and language impact on themselves their services and the clients they serve. Participants will become familiar with language associated with mentally healthy work environments and safe respectful practices. Participants will learn about common myths and stigmas around mental health and illness and how these impede people seeking help. Participants will develop practical strategies to work with people living with mental illness. They will explore and expand on their concepts of “recovery” and what this means. They will understand the barriers people with mental illness have in accessing services and how to minimise these barriers within their services. Participants will explore personal and professional boundaries and begin to answer the question, how much do I share of my own story?
Understanding mental illness
MIEACT’s Volunteer Educator films are viewed to show safe language around mental health and how consumers see the services and barriers to recovery
• Discussion on the importance of stories in defining our world
• Exploration of what makes people feel safe and how quickly this can change
• Unconscious bias and how we are not always aware of our own bias
• Motivation and how it is not always apparent why someone is seeking help
• The difference between equity and equality and how being equal is not always enough
• Practical listening exercises to explore the importance and impact of active listening

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Workplace mental health training
This course is suitable for people working in the area of mental health, drug and alcohol issues and more broadly in the community sector. Training sessions are limited to 15 participants per workshop. Hearing Stories Safely has a minimum attendance requirement of 10.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
The workshops are tailored to meet the specific needs of your organisation, including the length of the presentation. Our workshops are delivered in a 3.5 hour session or in a full day session, depending on how thoroughly your organisation wants to explore the concepts. Open courses operate throughout the year.
